According to news reports coming from Syria, President Bashar al-Assad reelected for another term receiving 88.7 percent of the vote during the just concluded Presidential Election. When he came to power fourteen years ago, he ran unopposed and receiver 99 percent of the vote. This year, election was held in early May 2014 and voting was limited only to the government controlled areas of the war torn country.
The United Nations requested Syria not to hold elections as the entire country is in turmoil and the legitimacy of the election is in doubt. The Syrian main opposition, The Islamic Front, called the election a fake and complained that the government is blackmailing people to vote. The West and its Arabian allies were quick to denounce the election. No election was held in significant part of the country in the north and east held by rebels. Not only that, many claims that the voting was rigged and the little known two challengers were introduced only to give legitimacy to the election.
The conflict that began in March 2011 still continues. More than 100,000 have been killed and millions have fled the country creating a human disaster as well as a refugee crisis for neighboring countries.
